Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park became a national park in 1916 because of its significance as an active volcanic landscape. All four types of volcanoes can be found here, as well as volcanic wonders like steam vents, mudpots, boiling pools, volcanic peaks, and painted dunes. Lassen Peak had its most significant activity in 1915 and exhibited minor activity through 1921. Today, after 200,000 years of volcanic activity, the park is full of peaceful forests and gem-like lakes that can be explored by foot over 150 miles of trails, or by car on a culturally significant scenic highway.
